Process:

  • Purpose: Sanilac County Schools follow Michigan's requirements to determine if a student has a Specific Learning Disability (SLD).

  • Model Used: Starting from the 2010-2011 school year, the "Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses" model is used to identify SLD in areas like:

    • Oral expression

    • Listening comprehension

    • Written expression

    • Basic reading skills

    • Reading fluency

    • Reading comprehension

    • Mathematics calculation

    • Mathematics problem solving

  • Sources of Information:

    • Parent input

    • Classroom teacher input

    • Tests of academic achievement and intellectual development

    • Classroom observation

    • Student performance on State-approved grade-level standards

    • Other legally required or relevant information

  • Evaluation Team:

    • Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) includes:

      • Certified teacher

      • Certified school psychologist

      • Other critical members as needed

    • MET prepares a written report analyzing data and recommending SLD certification.

  • SLD Determination:

    • Based on patterns of strengths and weaknesses in performance or achievement.

    • Compared to age, grade-level standards, or intellectual development.

  • Compliance:

    1. Procedures align with Federal regulations and State rules.
