Special Education

Process:
Purpose: Sanilac County Schools follow Michigan's requirements to determine if a student has a Specific Learning Disability (SLD).
Model Used: Starting from the 2010-2011 school year, the "Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses" model is used to identify SLD in areas like:
Oral expression
Listening comprehension
Written expression
Basic reading skills
Reading fluency
Reading comprehension
Mathematics calculation
Mathematics problem solving
Sources of Information:
Parent input
Classroom teacher input
Tests of academic achievement and intellectual development
Classroom observation
Student performance on State-approved grade-level standards
Other legally required or relevant information
Evaluation Team:
Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) includes:
Certified teacher
Certified school psychologist
Other critical members as needed
MET prepares a written report analyzing data and recommending SLD certification.
SLD Determination:
Based on patterns of strengths and weaknesses in performance or achievement.
Compared to age, grade-level standards, or intellectual development.
Compliance:
Procedures align with Federal regulations and State rules.
